Champion backcountry snowboarder Gage Watson was at the top of his game when one of his fans crashed and died—a death blamed on Gage. After being sued for negligence and stripped of his sponsorships, Gage had no choice but to leave the limelight behind and search for a new life.
Although Gage is now working as a ski patrol in Montana’s rugged mountains, as well as serving on the PEAK Rescue team, he still can’t find peace—or forget the woman who betrayed him.
As a former attorney and one of the youngest senators in the country, Ella Blair is used to being in the public eye. But she does have one secret that has remained hidden—a secret that could have saved Gage his career. Wracked with regret, she’ll do almost anything to atone for her betrayal of him.
When Ella’s brother goes missing on one of Glacier National Park’s most dangerous peaks, the last thing Gage wants is to let Ella join the search. Not only will he have to find her reckless brother, but he’ll have to keep her safe as well. But Ella is undeterred, and suddenly Gage finds himself in a high-stakes adventure on a mountain with a woman who could cost him everything—again. In a world of dangerous heights, devastating injuries, and blinding snowstorms, Gage and Ella must put aside the past and learn to trust each other if they hope to survive.

Interview with Gage Watson
From A Matter of Trust
By Susan May Warren

Meet Gage Watson

Gage Watson agrees to meet with me in the ski patrol hut of his ski resort, Big Bear Mountain, in Montana.  It’s taken me three months to nail down this interview, and I finally had to contact his boss, at PEAK Rescue to get him to talk to me.  “So Gage, thanks for stopping by today. I know you’re usually out rescuing skiers who get themselves in over their heads at your local ski resort, but we wanted to talk to you today about your upcoming book, A Matter of Trust.”

Gage is balancing a cup of coffee, wearing a pair of ski pants, the suspenders pulled off his shoulders, a black turtleneck, his hair caught in a stocking cap, and clearly, he forewent shaving today. “No problem, how can I help you?”

Except, he’s eyeing me with a bit of skepticism, and I understand. Gage has been out of the limelight for a few years now, after a terrible accident that cost the life of a novice freeriding snowboarder. A champion freerider, Gage’s career was destroyed when the press blamed him for the snowboarder’s death.
“So, this story is about you having to rescue a snowboarder who takes a treacherous route down a back country mountain Glacier National Park.  Why was this such a big deal?”

Gage leans back, glancing at his buddy Ty, tall and dark and also freshly off the slopes.  “Well, the snowboarder—actually, there were two—in question was skiing my route.”
At the quirk of my eyebrow, he continued.

“I got my start in freeriding by shooting an epic video of me skiing down some pretty wicked gnar off one of the highest peaks in Glacier.  But I’d been training for two years, and it’s lethal if you don’t know what you’re doing.  Ella was convinced he was going to kill himself.  Oh, yeah, that’s the other reason it was a big deal. The kid was Ella Blair’s brother.”

“The state senator from Vermont?  You know her?”

And now Gage looks away, a hue of red on his neck.  “Yeah. We dated, sort of. But…” He sighs then. “Actually, Ella is the reason I lost my career.  She brought a lawsuit from the family of the kid who died skiing with me and pretty much took me apart.  So….”  He shrugs like he’d like to forget it all.

“So, Ella Blair’s brother goes missing and she comes to you for help?”

“Mmmhmm.”

“And what did you say?”

He sighs, and again casts a look at Ty.  “What could I say?  She needed help, and…”

“And you were still in love with her?”

Ty looks at me then and I don’t flinch. Because I know the truth.  “You took her with you on the search for her brother, didn’t you? Were you trying to rekindle the past?

“She’s an amazing freerider, and I didn’t have a choice.”

“Mmmhmm,” I say.

“Listen. The very last person I wanted to spend two days with on the mountain was Ella Blair.  The last time we spent time together she…okay, she did a pretty epic job of eviscerating me. So no, I wasn’t still in love with her. I was…she was just stubborn.”

“But you still took her with you on the search.”

His mouth tightens at my words.

“So, then what happened, Gage?”

He considers me, takes a sip of his coffee.  Then, “I nearly got her killed.”

I blink, because I didn’t know that part.

“And…?”

“And I discovered that there was more to the story than I thought.”
“Second chances?”

And now he smiles, and when he does his eyes light up, deep brown, rich and holding secrets.
“You’ll just have to read the book.”

He gets up then and shoots his empty cup toward a trash basket. “You ready to hit the slopes, Ty?”

Ty leans up and grabs his jacket, shoots me a look. Winks. And as Gage swaggers out, I realize that there is much more to Gage than he is willing to reveal, even now.  And with everything inside me, I wish I’d been on that snowboarding trip with Ella and Gage.
