The captivating sequel to the award-winning The Day the Angels Fell

Abra Miller carries a secret and a responsibility she never expected.

Before the Tree of Life, everything in Abra Miller’s life had been predictable. Safe. Normal. But after the Tree, everything has felt fragile . . . like holding a soap bubble in the palm of her hand. After years of fruitless searching for the next Tree, she begins to wonder if it was nothing more than a vivid dream.

Now sixteen, Abra finds a clue to the whereabouts of the next Tree of Life when an ominous woman—who looks exactly like a ghost from her past—compels her to travel to New Orleans where she’ll find one of seven gateways between this world and Over There. But she’s not the only one interested in finding the gateway. There’s also a young man searching for his father and sister, who escaped through it years before. As Abra enters the Edge of Over There and begins her pursuit of the Tree once more, she doesn’t know whom to fear or whom to trust.
She’s also starting to think that some doorways should never be opened.

Praise for The Edge of Over There:

“Blending Biblical elements and urban myths, Smucker creates an enthralling story of supernatural battles between the forces of good and evil.” -- Publishers Weekly

“The Edge of Over There is a mesmerizing, menacing fantasy. Shawn Smucker fuses New Orleans lore, Christian themes, and dystopian landscapes in a thorough exploration of love and its unintended results.” -- Foreword Reviews (Starred Review)

I was subtler with my wily ways in getting selected to review THE EDGE OVER THERE by Shawn Smucker, when this beauty popped up in our blogger group. This time, I relied upon my trusty lock-picking kit to unlock the door that leads to Kristine’s Super-Secret-Sign-Up Room and entered undetected.

Unlike Smucker’s character, Abra, I do not have a key that can open, lock, and seal every door. I had to rely upon my crafty, racoon-like ways in order to get chosen to review the continuing story that originally began with a cat in a tree … or did it?

You’ll recall (I’m sure you haven’t forgotten!) that I reviewed the first book in this series titled THE DAY THE ANGELS FELL last year. If you need a refresher, click here to pop over to the review. But be forewarned, for once you enter this story, you are bound to stay with it until you see it through to the end. Putting this story aside may very well be a mortal sin!

Within these pages are forbidden doors, gates that should never be opened, pools that are windows to other times, and an ancient key that can open, close, and seal them shut … a key that isn’t really a key at all, but a sword that has existed since the beginning of time. And why should such a key exist, you ask (for I have asked the same question)? To extinguish the Tree, of course!

My eyes shift, instinctively, to the blazing cover of THE EDGE OF OVER THERE by Shawn Smucker, and come to rest, as if drawn to it by some deep magic, on the ancient tree that has cast deep roots into the center of a strange, forbidden city that lies at the edge of Over There. I inhale a deep breath, thinking of all those trapped inside that city … thinking of how they’d gotten in there in the first place … and a shiver runs up my spine.

The tomb of none other than Marie Laveau serves as the door to The Edge of Over There.

Can you guess who opens the door to allow entrance?

I flip open the back cover of the book (gingerly, of course, because … as y’all know by now … I like my books to remain eternally new) and examine the photo of the author. I squint my eyes and gasp at the realization that I’m fairly certain (though I have no concrete proof) that, like Mr. Tennen and Mr. Henry, Mr. Smucker is one of Them … the ones tasked with watching for a resurgence of the Tree. For I cannot … no … I refuse to believe this story to be a work of fiction. Frankly, it is too real!

Of course, I could be wrong. But, just between you and me, I seriously doubt it. His characters are real, alive, and multifaceted. It is impossible for them to be merely constructed of words!

Abra is a strong female character who wields an ancient sword that only two others have held since the beginning of time. Like Harry Potter, she alone is tasked with saving humanity. I pause a moment and realize that I’m very close to giving away spoilers, and y’all know how I am loath to spoil a good story for anyone.

But I will comment here that I found the meaning this character's name to be of great interest. Not only is Abra the feminine of Abraham (a very important man in the Bible), the name also means “lesson” and “example.”

There’s something to be said about a lesson or example.

It’s never easy being the chosen one … but someone’s gotta do it.

Abra isn’t the only important character in this book. There really aren’t any minor characters, for they all play an extremely important part in this story of real life … oh, ahem … I mean fiction. There are a few new characters who show up in this book. One of them is named Leo, which means “lion” and “brave.”

No more hints. STOP ASKING, DAGNABIT!

THE EDGE OVER THERE is written in a rhythmic exchange between past and present, the same style employed by the bards of old who captivated their listeners around a glowing campfire late into the night. And this is why I have my suspicions about Mr. Smucker. I believe he is one of the Ancient Ones. (But don’t tell him I said this!)

Though THE EDGE OF OVER THERE is a sequel, it is written like a stand-alone. And as I’ve done in this review post, there are lots of Easter Eggs dropped throughout the book … enough to keep the reader informed of what happened before.

I’ve got my trusty lock-picking kit at the ready for sneaking back into Kristine’s Super-Secret-Sign-Up Room, for I sense there will be another occurrence of the Tree. If you haven’t read both of Smucker's books, I urge you to do so immediately! Stop dilly-dallying around, and grab a copy now so you’ll know what to look for when the Tree begins to emerge once more.

Shawn Smucker has done it again. He’s woven a story so mesmerizing that I slept no more than two hours together until I read the last sentence!

Shawn Smucker will capture readers’ imaginations with this masterfully written debut novel that combines elements of mystery and magical realism.

It was the summer of storms, strays, and strangers. The summer that lightning struck the big oak tree in the front yard. The summer his mother died in a tragic accident.

Twelve-year-old Samuel Chambers would do anything to turn back time. Prompted by three strange carnival fortune-tellers and the surfacing of his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Samuel begins his search for the Tree of Life—the only thing that could possibly bring his mother back. His quest to defeat death entangles him and his best friend, Abra, in an ancient conflict and forces Samuel to grapple with an unwelcome question: could it be possible that death is a gift?

Haunting and hypnotic, The Day the Angels Fell is a story that explores the difficult questions of life in a voice that is fresh, friendly, and unafraid. With this powerful novel, Shawn Smucker has carved out a spot for himself in the tradition of authors Madeleine L’Engle and Lois Lowry.

I have been convinced, for some years now, that cats tread the line between two worlds: the one we see, and the one we cannot … that a strange cat is a harbinger. Even as I step out onto my porch every morning to feed the two wildling cats that arrived out of nowhere last summer, that refuse to allow me to pet their tuxedo-patterned fur, I step carefully, gingerly, unless I slip over some unseen line between my safe bubble and into an invisible, dangerous terrain.

It seems as though my suspicions are not unfounded.

I stroke the lush cover of “The Day the Angels Fell,” and my hand instinctively pauses over the silhouette of the mysterious cat perched in the palm of the Lightning Tree imprinted on the dust cover. A shiver runs down my spine as the looming darkness beyond the tree limbs seeps through my fingertips. If I strain my ears hard enough, I can hear the distant pitter patter sound of fat, summer raindrops falling against the bark of the tree that holds the cat beneath my hand, on the cover of Shawn Smucker’s marvelous book.

A sip of hot tea chases away the chill that has inched its way up my arm and has wound around my heart, where an old scar marks the loss of a dearest loved one- my father. The loss, so long ago, had vanquished a part of me, leaving me longing for the return of the Tree of Life just like Smucker’s main character, Sam.

But wasn’t this book supposed to be fiction? A fairytale? After having read each and every lavish sentence in this book, I’m convinced, without a shadow of a doubt, that Smucker is telling a true story concealed within a fable.

This story begins in the present, with Sam as an old man. This story begins with a weight of mystery that pulls the reader down into the depths of a story as deep as eternity itself and as wide as the space between the stars. There is darkness here, so tread softly. But there is light in the bonds of family, there is strength in friendship, so carry your sword bravely. For there is a battle to be waged, and only the bonds of friendship, the ties of love, and the faith that all will turn out as planned, will see you through.

Just remember to listen to that small voice within. It will help you discern the difference between an angel of light and of darkness. This is important, so do not take it lightly!

Though the tale begins in Sam’s present, the reader is soon pulled into the distant past … into Sam’s childhood … to when his mother dies in a very mysterious incident involving lightning and a strange cat. I quickly pull my hand away from the cover of the book, for it happened right there where the cat is perched in the Lightning Tree.

As I type this, the temptation of spilling all the glorious details of this story tears at my fingers, willing them to reveal all the secrets that lay hidden in this book that reminds me so much of C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Oh, how I wish to reveal who the real hero of this story is and how happy I was, as I turned the very last page of the book, to discover that “The Day the Angels Fell” is not the end of Sam’s story. For there is a sequel coming in 2018, and I have already added it to my mental “TBR” bookshelf.

I invite you to join me in diving into Smucker’s book, for you will discover that as soon as you turn back the front cover, the carefully-spun tale (it is a true story, I assure you!) will pull you under the dark surface and into an ancient tale of good versus evil. But I will leave it up to you to decide whether or not death is a gift.

“The Day the Angels Fell” is the best book I’ve read in a very long time. Smucker casts out his line, reels you in, then casts the line out again until you are hooked. Within these covers reside ancient monsters, battling angels, and a tale as old as time. “The Day the Angels Fell” is spun with a yarn as ancient as the universe, its tapestry strewn with twinkling stars and striped with the darkness that lies between the galaxies.

The wildling cats are tapping against the window on my front porch, calling for me to deliver their breakfast kibble with their mysterious short mews. My dog barks at the front door, her hackles raised, and she stands between me and the front door as if protecting me from some unseen force that threatens to catch me away on a wild adventure.

So I leave you with this last sentiment before poking my head out the door, looking both ways, and making sure there is no Amarok awaiting to devour me-

Don’t let another day pass before reading this book!

I hereby grant “The Day the Angels Fell” 5 Mysterious Foreboding Brooms!
