Texans love the morning meal, whether it’s bacon and eggs (often eaten in a breakfast taco) or something as distinctively nontraditional as saag paneer omelets, pon haus, or goat curry. A Lone Star breakfast can be a time for eating healthy, or for indulging in decadent food and drink. And with Texas’s rich regional and cultural diversity, an amazing variety of dishes graces the state’s breakfast and brunch tables. The first Texas cookbook dedicated exclusively to the morning meal, Breakfast in Texas gathers nearly one hundred recipes that range from perfectly prepared classics to the breakfast foods of our regional cuisines (Southern, Mexican, German, Czech, Indian, and Asian among them) to stand-out dishes from the state’s established and rising chefs and restaurants.

Terry Thompson-Anderson organizes the book into sections that cover breakfast and brunch libations (with and without alcohol); simple, classic, and fancy egg presentations; pancakes, French toast, and waffles; meat lover’s dishes; seafood and shellfish; vegan dishes and sides; and pastries. The recipes reference locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, and Thompson-Anderson provides enjoyable notes about the chefs who created them or the cultural history they represent. She also offers an expert primer on cooking eggs, featuring an encounter with Julia Child, as well as a selection of theme brunches (the boozy brunch, the make-ahead brunch, New Year’s Day brunch, Mother’s Day brunch with seasonal ingredients, teenage daughter’s post-slumber party breakfast, and more). Sandy Wilson’s color photographs of many of the dishes and the chefs and restaurants who serve them provide a lovely visual counterpoint to the appetizing text.

When I was presented with the opportunity of reviewing BREAKFAST IN TEXAS by Terry Thompson-Anderson, I took one look at that glorious, delicious cover and said, “yes, please!” After all, who doesn’t love breakfast in Texas? Y’all know I do, because I’m a born and raised Texas gal straight from Nacogdoches - the oldest town in Texas! You’ll love breakfast in Texas, too, once you peruse this beautiful cookbook!

But, let’s pause a moment and imagine the buttery aroma of cinnamon rolls wafting from the oven. Can you hear the sizzling of bacon and clinking of silverware against china? Dang, I’m hangry!

BREAKFAST IN TEXAS is a lovely cookbook featuring “Recipes for Elegant Brunches, Down-Home Classics, and Local Favorites.” And, boy, does it deliver!

Within the gorgeous covers of this cookbook, readers discover delectable recipes that range from breakfast and brunch libations to enticing vegan breakfast & brunch menus. This book contains a cozy variety to suit anyone wanting to enjoy the bounties of Texas.

I simply adore the large color photos that illustrate this book - they drive me mad wanting to lick the very ink from the pages.

But the beautiful photographs are not the only tasty thing about this delish Texas breakfast tour of wonderment. This book is stuffed with great ideas for menus for brunches, slumber parties, and even make-ahead breakfasts.

I have been obsessed with party menus since I was in homemaking class in high school way back when ole Buck was a calf.  This book provides a wide variety of menus and brunch ideas for various celebrations. And I cannot wait to host the “It’s Finally Spring Brunch” using the menu and recipes in this book…especially “The Driskill Hotel’s 1886 Café & Bakery’s Orange-Currant Scones with Lemon Curd.” In fact, I mean to chow down on me some scones! Just sayin’.

Mouth-watering recipes, eye-popping color photos, and fun menu ideas are not the only things that this beautiful cookbook contains, there are also instructions on things like “The Basics of Cooking Eggs,” which is harder than it sounds, and “Texas Hill Country Distillery-Legal Moonshine.” Yes, you read that right. West Virginia isn’t the only place where ‘shine is distilled, yo! Gorgeous aqua-blue pages mark these essays. Did I tell you that’s my favorite color? Well, now you know.

This cookbook truly is a fun tour of breakfast in Texas and it would make an excellent addition to any cookbook collection. In fact, it would be a great coffee table book even if the reader is not a cook. It’s just plain fun to read!

I’m not sure whether Terry Thompson-Anderson is an evil mastermind or merely a talented cookbook author … or both! All I can tell you is that I gained 10 pounds flipping through this book. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go make the irresistible Chicken and Waffles recipe on page 87.

Oh, before I go, I hereby grant BREAKFAST IN TEXAS five delicious brooms! Now, go grab a copy! And get one for your mama, too! The purchase link is below. What are you waiting for?!
